Details from a Mexican-Filipino wedding

A friend of mine, who happens to be a friend of this wedding’s groom, Michael, sent me a link to his wedding photos and didn’t even need to tell me, “you need to blog this wedding.” She knows me well — as soon as I saw these photos, I knew I had to feature it. It’s not just the fact that I am also Filipino — it was the fact that so many of the lovely details from both Mexican weddings and Filipino weddings were combined so flawlessly into this one event.

In case you weren’t sure, the bride, Bianca, is Mexican and the groom, Michael, is Filipino. I don’t generally include photos of the bridal party or guests, preferring instead to focus on the wedding decorations and details. But in this case, the bride and groom and their entourage are wearing so many of the details, there was no getting around it. For example, the groom is wearing a traditional Filipino formal shirt, called a barong Tagalog. Barongs are worn instead of suits in the Philippines, because, well, suits are way too heavy to wearing the hot, humid climates of the Philippines.

Bianca is wearing a traditional Mexican wedding veil, called a mantilla, which stand out for their especially elaborate edges.

And here’s another interesting, kind of lovely, culture-blending incidental fact: both Filipino and Mexican wedding traditions are heavily influenced by Spanish culture, since Spain colonized both countries for several centuries.

These photos, by the way, were all shot by Stacy Kokes Photography.

Fall wedding inspiration

Saturday is the first day of fall. Fall is a lovely time for a wedding — not only are the days and nights cooler, but the colors are spectacular.

When you think of fall weddings, the color orange jumps to mind, but a fall wedding can incorporate shades of red, yellow and green as well. With trees turning colors during fall — it does happen in Los Angeles, contrary to belief, but I’ve heard that this process is even more dramatic on the East Coast — orange and red leaves inspire many autumn weddings. But that shouldn’t be all.

What wedding decoration trends will we see in 2013?

I’ve been busy looking over Pinterest to get an idea of what brides are planning for their weddings in 2013.

I know its only September, but before you know it, it’ll be the holidays and couples will be getting engaged left and right. Then, all of a sudden, it’s 2013, and what are people going to be doing to decorate their weddings? More burlap? More peacock themes? I’ve seen some predictions so far, namely from 3D Memoirs (which has some great ideas and examples). But based on what’s getting pinned, I have a few of my own ideas.

Massive sale at David’s Bridal

I was just reading earlier that September is a good month to buy stuff like cars, large appliances and back-to-school supplies, probably because stores are ramping up for the gift giving months of November and December. I would add that September is probably also a good month to buy a wedding dress, and David’s Bridal is proving me right.

Create your own lacy candle covers

Probably the most frequent comment, question and/or request I get is how to replicate this look.

Flickr photo by Emily Grace

My answer is always the same — I don’t know. I found the photo on Flickr and included it on an old post about unique candle decorations, and, unfortunately, that means I didn’t create these candle covers myself. However, seeing as how its also this site’s most popular pinned image, I figured — why not try to find out how to do this?
