There is a lot of interest here in decorating with fabric, particularly ceiling decorations. But it can get expensive, if you use a professional florist or wedding decorator. So how about trying to do it yourself?

The difficult thing about DIY wedding decorations is trying to get the materials that the professionals have. Luckily, there are a few florists and decoration companies that have recognized there might be some demand for wedding decoration kits.

One of those companies is WeddingDecor.com. WeddingDecor.com has pictures of some spectacular head table setups and backdrops. But they are also willing to sell you a backdrop kit that includes everything you might need to create your own elaborate backdrop. For your own personal kit, you can choose from 40 colors of bridal satin, plus ivory, white or black sheer fabric to accompany it. I don’t know what a kit looks like or what one actually includes, but I hope that they include detailed instructions and design possibilities, since that doesn’t necessarily come naturally to everyone. WeddingDecor.com says that a drop ceiling is required for these kits, so if you’re working with a smooth, solid ceiling, you’re out of luck.

These kits, while a good idea, are not cheap. They include quite a bit, for the not-quite-bargain price of $495 + shipping and handling.

There is a kit option you can try on Etsy. PalmaHomeDesign‘s Etsy shop, which offers custom, made-to-order home and wedding decor, offers a similar kit that can be used for ceilings, backdrops or head or cake tables. The kit includes two 45-inch-by-13-foot finished satin drapes in black, chocolate, white or ivory.

PalmaHomeDesign’s kits are much more reasonably priced at $34.00 + $7 for shipping, but don’t include nearly as much as WeddingDecor.com’s. They do, however, offer to do custom lengths and point customers to their other photos for ideas on how to use the drapes.
