Flowers for your flower girl

Bridal flowers are not just for the bride, but also for the flower girls. How many do you have? That’s up to you. You generally have at least one. Then again, do you absolutely have to have one? That’s totally up to you. Anyway, I wanted to explore the different styles of flower girl flowers. The most common style is the basket, like the one below. Funny thing is, I think there is a difference between the flower girl baskets that you commonly see in magazines and the ones my mom did — the flowers. In magazines, movies and such, you usually see the baskets full of rose petals that the flower girl throws on the aisle, for the bride to walk over. But my mom did flower baskets with the flowers staying in the baskets. I know some Catholic churches would prefer the latter, for easier clean up.

And yes, the flower girl above was me. This is circa early 80s, at the very least. And by the looks of things, those flowers are silk, but who knows now.

These flower baskets, done a few years ago for a silver anniversary wedding at Pickwick Gardens in Burbank, are exactly what I’m talking about — basically little flower arrangements attached to a basket. They’re a little heavier than rose petals, since there’s Oasis foam in the baskets to keep the flowers hydrated.

The flower ball. It was quite popular for a while, if I remember correctly, but aside from the novelty of having a ball of just flowers, I don’t really like the style. First off, its really heavy — basically that’s a whole lot of roses glued into a foam ball. Do you have any idea how heavy two dozen roses or more can be? And, because it needs so many rose buds, its expensive. Finally, what’s the flower girl going to do with it afterward? Throw it around? Leave it on the floor somewhere? Uh uh. Go for a regular basket.

I featured this Flickr photo previously when I wrote about pew decorations. When you really look at the photo, you notice that the pew decorations are so much more elaborate in comparison to the flower girls’ bouquets. Interesting, huh? Personally, I like smaller flowers for flower girls. Like I said before, if they’re not going to be throwing flower petals, just give them a tiny bouquet. That way, if they toss them, no harm, no foul. It almost appears as if their head wreaths might be using more flowers than their bouquets.
